Asshole's basic guide to Monaco

Setup
Monaco is the slowest track on the calendar. Because we have come from tracks with high speed corners to one with very low speed corners, we must consider how the car will behave with very low aero grip. This will be very different for everyone because we have different mechanical setups, but for example, my sets are designed for maximum rear rotation as that’s what suits my driving style. Take away the aero and I’m left with a car where the rear will be extremely unstable in traction zones and particularly under braking when turning. The easiest solution would be to run with a rearward biased aero balance and to also move the brake bias forward to reduce the likeliness of rear locking. I also have to open up the differential on coast as engine braking will hugely affect car’s rotation in low speed corners. These are some ideas to consider.
Moving from balance to grip, we can run lower tyre pressures to increase tyre contact patch. Dampening (decreasing slow bump and rebound) settings should be optimised for faster weight transitioning in the chicanes and you may also consider decreasing fast bump and rebound slightly in order to control tyre conformation to the curbs and rough road surface, but make changes with respect to the lowering of tyre pressures.

Driving
Stay away from the barriers is pretty much the best advice I can give. There’s no point in driving heroically if you’re gonna bin it. Respect the fact that you are going to lack aero grip. Don’t just do five laps, complain of balance and “OUT OF LIGUE!” Of course your car is going to feel clumsy! And no, you won’t be able to throw your car into corners the way you’ve been doing. Accept it and adjust accordingly.
Once you’ve done that, start feeling for the car’s limit of grip – which I recommend by driving slowly and then speeding up gradually, because the grip limit will be much lower than you expect. Now you’ll be able to fine-tune and perhaps incorporate more advanced driving techniques which are critical to such a technical circuit. Should your car’s balance allow, try using rear momentum to slingshot the car around the chicanes rather than skating over them. This will allow later braking and earlier acceleration, however at the expense of rear deg and higher risk of crashing, so you will have to tone it down come the race.
Oh, and did I mention to stay away from the barriers?

For a demonstration of the “slingshot” (I made that up, call it what you like), at 1:05 notice that I apply throttle to sustain corner speed whilst backing the rear into the chicane before sliding it in the other direction to create a faster momentum shift, or transition to the second apex, and allowing the rear to step out marginally in order to straighten the car up for earlier throttle application.
